The sea is closer to my love
and I to thee am wed:
Not thee my love
but love, the sea,
the strand and the beach-head.
The sea is closer to my dreams
I sing them to the wind;
not to be heard
by beast, or bird:
To clear my clouded mind.
Oh sea, wild sea, my secrets keep
as I stand on the shore
if you reveal
my love, you steal:
I shall not tell thee more.

About
Just playing with words today, imagining a lovelorn walk along a deserted beach. Also employing a bit of an antiquated style to see how that comes over.
Sharing for Earthweal’s Open Link Weekend. Felt I needed a break from festive writing and maybe a fresh sea breeze is just the thing.
The photo is of Beachy Head, a place I used to visit a lot when I lived in the South East of England. I found it on Pixabay.
On the level of Thomas Hardy. Seriously.
The last stanza . . . love imagery and intimate friendship and conversation with the sea.
Thank you, Andrew, that is some compliment!
Meditative and soothing lines. 💓 Many secrets the sea does keep. 🌊
Thank you Michele 🙏
Lovely!
Thank you!
a different play on style, words and fun. you always jump out of the box and grow Ingrid. oh the sea.. how I love your soothing secrets held there for all of us to imagaine. ❤️❤️❤️
Thanks Cindy: I like to try out different styles 🌊
you’re most welcome! love that about you!
This is so beautiful….the sentiments, the lilting rhythm and rhyme, and the style, after the old masters, which you have echoed to perfection.
Thank you Sherry 🙏
Slovenia’s answer to Thomas Hardy, maybe but he could be a melancholy old bugger. Seriously though, another beauty!
Thanks, Hobbo: I’m good at melancholy! 😃
😂😂
We can always use a bit of the sea…(k)
Certainly 🌊
Per your comment on my poem, your rhyme scheme through this is amazing!!

Well, it’s a delight and I sure resonate with the sea notes — the eternal tides through us while we grasp for mortal equivalents and human loves. But in the longing spaces we hear the sea. – Brendan
That’s a great interpretation thank you Brendan 🙏
This is breathtaking Ingrid. Bravo!!!!!
Thank you so much Gabriela 🙏❤️
My pleasure Ingrid. It’s a masterpiece ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Writing a ballad, an old-fashioned song, is like a breath of fresh air. It takes us out of complex angsts and pares emotion down to its simplest form. I like this very much.
Thank you, Jane: I think it was a bit of a relief for me as well!
It’s craftsmanship. Ne proud 🙂
I loved your poem! The sea keeps all its secrets!
