Come, workers of the world, let us unite
in questioning the purpose of our role:
to build a future fair, and free, and bright
or drudge towards some profit-driven goal?
We may feel we are cogs within a wheel
within another wheel relentlessly
such wheels are turned until we barely feel
our role within our planet’s destiny.
Perhaps we are climbing a ladder high
to reach the topmost rung, the next pay grade;
but do we ever stop to question why
we have been led to think it’s what we need?
Infinite growth upon a finite planet
Is just a myth, driven by greed for profit.

Another sonnet for the workers…
I’ve been a cog in the corporate wheel more times than I would care to count. In my most recent office job, I did a basic accountancy course. Part of the training was to examine the Financial Statements of some major corporations. The sole purpose of most of these behemoth multinational companies was to make profit for shareholders. Of course, they paid lip service to ‘providing consumer goods which change peoples lives,’ or some such bullshit, but the idea of changing the planet for the better didn’t come into the equation. Such ideals are not fit for the Anthropocene Era. For further reading, I recommend ‘There is No Planet B‘ by Mike Berners-Lee.
