My heart is iron
my blood is red like yours
but unlike yours, it’s incandescent
glowing wild with its own heat and light.
My lungs are green:
you are a cancer,
killing healthy tissue until
all that’s left behind is charred to ash.
My surface is
71% water, more
than you need to survive, and yet
you feel you have the right to pollute and deplete it.
I am a rock
and a rock feels no pain
and when I say ‘my heart is iron’
this means I can be heartless, if I choose.
I will devour
you, and all who had
the untimely bad luck to share
my space with you, and make myself anew.
Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

This week, Brendan has challenged us to write ‘the songs of the Earth Shaman,’ perhaps envisioning the earth itself as a wounded healer with the power to renew itself through pain.
