My heart is iron #poetry #earthweal

My heart is iron
my blood is red like yours
but unlike yours, it’s incandescent
glowing wild with its own heat and light.

My lungs are green:
you are a cancer,
killing healthy tissue until
all that’s left behind is charred to ash.

My surface is
71% water, more
than you need to survive, and yet
you feel you have the right to pollute and deplete it.

I am a rock
and a rock feels no pain
and when I say ‘my heart is iron’
this means I can be heartless, if I choose.

I will devour
you, and all who had
the untimely bad luck to share
my space with you, and make myself anew.

Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Sincerely yours,
The planet you call Earth

Written for earthweal

This week, Brendan has challenged us to write ‘the songs of the Earth Shaman,’ perhaps envisioning the earth itself as a wounded healer with the power to renew itself through pain.

  1. Adore your imaginative concept, and this little human has received and understood your poignant letter perfectly… Is every human going to receive the same wondrous letter … ??

      1. Indeed we must! I’m not ready to give up yet and I don’t think you are either 💪 🌏 ❤️

  2. I love the personification of an elemental, its sullen glow leaden and laden with molten iron. There was an alchemy to the old smithcraft, a daunting enterprise of forging what the earth produced in her own belly. (Art as forgery, too.) And our productions are insignificant in the geologic sweep of time. A poem to learn humility by …

  3. I live the imagery in this Ingrid, and the weaving in of that Paul Simon quote! Jim

  4. Don’t know how I ended up as “anonymous” but anyway ….enjoyed the poem, the voice, the imagery and that Paul Simon quote….JIM

  5. Yes, over the course of time, earth will heal herself of us. She speaks well and clearly here.

  6. I love that you wrote a letter from Mother Earth, Ingrid, and that you made her so strong, especially in the lines:
‘my blood is red like yours
    but unlike yours, it’s incandescent
glowing wild with its own heat and light’
    and
    ‘I am a rock
and a rock feels no pain
and when I say ‘my heart is iron’
this means I can be heartless, if I choose’.
Another ruthless woman! This is a warning not to be ignored.
