At the turning of the year #haibun #dVerse

The sun appearing over a thick band of grey cloud after many days is a celebration, lighting the world in glory. A welcome sight on the eve of New Year’s Eve.

We should take the time to celebrate all the golden moments, which pass so quickly, yet live within. The true magic of Christmas resides in such moments: light in the children’s eyes, sleepless nights, anticipation…Will he come?

Reflection is also an act of celebration, a worthy ritual at the turning of the year, when we look back on all that has been, and whatever is to come. Embrace it, dive in:

Break the barrier
push the boundaries of life
beyond containment

Everyone’s favourite Poets’ Pub re-opens after the Holiday Break, and Lisa opens the proceedings by hosting Haibun Monday, where she asks us to write haibun on the theme of celebration.

  1. With two young ones, you are doubly blessed to see that excitement in their faces. Best wishes for you and yours in the coming year, Ingrid <3

  2. Truer words have never been spoken, Ingrid! Loved this snippet the most:

“We should take the time to celebrate all the golden moments, which pass so quickly, yet live within. The true magic of Christmas resides in such moments: light in the children’s eyes, sleepless nights, anticipation…Will he come?”

It’s so much fun and lively when thinking back to those days. My favorite is the holiday baked goods. Idk why, but everything tastes better when you’re a kid in my experience. Must be the excitement and curiosity that festers and even memories associated with them too. I still love the holidays, to an extent, but I don’t feel the magic as much. This season was hard on me a bit admittedly, but we must take each moment and live through it as it comes like you say; cherish them, appreciate them. Amazing piece. <3 <3

    1. Thank you so much for your in-depth reading and comment, Lucy! My children were so excited they were literally bouncing off the walls 😊 I think I caught a little of that magic ❤️

  3. I’m enraptured by these lovely words. They’re right up my zone of extraordinaire: the ordinary gifts that abound for us everyday. What a celebration these deserve. 👏
And sad thing these golden moments that almost always replenish our souls would totally go unnoticed if we didn’t give them prominence. (I have a post scheduled that speaks of that)
So I’m overjoyed to find this common theme here. Spoke ti me tons, Ingrid. Thank you. Lovely all the way around. I bless you. Happy New Year.

  4. I loved this “Reflection is also an act of celebration, a worthy ritual at the turning of the year, when we look back on all that has been, and whatever is to come. Embrace it, dive in:”

  5. “Reflection is also an act of celebration, a worthy ritual” – really like that philosophy; lovely warm haibun.

  6. Excellent, Ingrid.
Are we not all children at this time of the year? If not in anticipation of a fabled benevolent figure, then in an expectation of positive change in the new year. Sometimes, we cannot help being a hopeful kind.

  7. So true that reflection is an act of celebration. I have One Word that centers my year and last year it was celebration and that focused me on looking back with fresh eyes. It’s amazing the beauty you can find, when you look for it, isn’t it?

I so love your haiku, too. Breaking the boundaries: so often I discover it’s my own thinking that holds me back from enjoying life. Learning to still and listen for the way that breaks “the rules” to love.

    1. I’ve just been writing on that very subject again, what Blake called ‘mind-forg’d manacles.’ Thank you for your perspective and insightful comment!
