Sleep, lover, near me
gently, do
and in your arms, I’ll dream a dream of you
Sleep lover, softly
through the night
to waken with me at the dawn’s first light:
A lover’s lullaby is nothing new
but never was a serenade more true.

Tonight, Sarah hosts Quadrille, and the watchword is ‘sleep.’ I will probably do most of my reading tomorrow, as I am out for a family birthday this evening. The title of this poem was inspired by a Janis Ian song. I know Merril is a fan, so hopefully she will appreciate this 🙂 :
In other news, Work on Wounds I Healed continues apace…

Oh, that’s so quietly romantic. There’s a Jacobean feel to the ending. Very lovely.
Thank you, Sarah – I wanted a compressed sonnet feel, so I’m pleased that came across!
I immediately thought of sonnets – the volta and everything.
😊
Beautiful song; beautiful poem. Love the “sleep lover” repetition. A gently romantic write. 🙂
Thank you Lillian 🙏
Love what you did from the title… so wonderful what one may get together…
Thanks Björn!
How simple and true a poem! I love the feeling hidden within. <3
I wondered if it were too simple, but sometimes simplicity works!

There is a delicateness to your touch that is as if you were painting with a feather…
Thank you, Ain!
To fall asleep in a lover’s arms, then dream of them, only to awake with them is the trifecta. Loved this, Ingrid.
Thank you Lisa 😊

Super sweet, a lullaby, of sorts. I still sing sometimes to my two, but not as often as I used to when they were little.
Me too, although they’d probably rather I shut up!
