Two Collared Doves #poetry

I saw two collared doves at Hesket Newmarket
cloud-coloured collared doves crossing the road
one leaned it’s feathered head towards the other
to share some secret wish, lighten a load

I loved you then, she cooed (coo-cooed)
I love you still, cooed he
in such a manner, they were wooed,
would ever-loved be

It was a market day in early summer
a sultry, pollen-heavy market day
when one dove pledged her love unto the other
who joined his heart to hers most willingly

The people on the green drank ale and hollered
the doves crossing the road paid them no heed
for deep in love they were, feathered and collared
of human praise or censure, had no need

They nested in the eves or in the rafters
it little mattered, now that they were paired
they cooed of clouds, and dreams and ever-afters
since they crossed that bright day, such dreams they shared

  1. Your words match their sounds. I have some that visit my windowsill from time to time. It does seem they are always together. (K)

    1. Thanks Cindy! No πŸ˜… that would be Pixabay…

I was driving when I saw the two doves described in the poem πŸ’ž

  2. “the doves crossing the road paid them no heed

  3. What a beautiful moment, described. I adore the rhythmic lullaby-esque quality of the poem and the stunning symmetry of the photo combined. Lovely to hear you read and enjoyed your frankness! I totally agree with your openness of talking about natural cycles, bodies, things that affect us and our natures, it becomes so much part of our identity too. It moved me, and I hereby send you a virtual hug <3 XOX πŸ™‚

    1. I think so many of us suffer in silence and think there is something wrong with us, when in truth there is something wrong with a society that can’t discuss health problems openly and do its best to heal the sick! Hug coming right back atcha! πŸ€—β€οΈ

      1. I absolutely agree with you. Society needs a re-shift, and it’ll happen when more women are brave enough to voice their realities as you do. I happily take a leaf out of your book! You remind me to be more open (though sometimes I over-share, ha ha!) Hug warmly received and appreciated, thank you <3 Wishing you a great weekend πŸ™‚

  4. This is incredibly beautiful, Ingrid! I especially love; “the doves crossing the road paid them no heed for deep in love they were, feathered and collared of human praise or censure, had no need.”❀️❀️

  5. It’s it wonderful that love can fill us up so completely that there is no need for anything more.
“They nested in the eves or in the rafters
it little mattered, now that they were paired”

  6. I loved the last verse – a testament to their unending love. I have a pair of doves here that eat from my feeder. I do so enjoy their songs of endearment.

  7. Beautiful imagery and story, I enjoyed reading the poem very much. The birds remind me of a bird-couple that lives above my window.

  8. Lovely to see you Thursday, Ingrid! The line “to share some secret wish, lighten a load” ~~~ will linger in my mind. Cheers.
