Postcards from Slovenia #22: Kranjska Gora in Summer

Another popular Slovenian Ski Resort which makes a great summer holiday destination for lovers of mountain scenery is Kranjska Gora. The beauty of the place lies in its situation below some of the most dramatic mountain peaks in the area: the high and jagged rock wall of Prisank and its neighbouring mountains towering high above the valley form a dramatic and formidable backdrop.

Summer Activities in Kranjska Gora

Ascent of the Vitranc 1 Chairlift

Though the ski slopes are closed, you can still enjoy the summer sledge which operates from the top of the Vitranc 1 chairlift. It’s a great family activity, and children over six years old can ride unaccopanied. I did find the chairlift ride a little ‘bouncy’ though, which was a bit nerve-racking if, like me, heights make you nervous.

Close to Kranjska Gora is the beautiful lake Jasna, formed of two shallow man-made lakes at the base of the Vršič pass. This is a great spot for sunbathing, swimming or fly-fishing. It’s also the perfect place for a family picnic in summer.

If you prefer more action and adventure, head up the Vršič pass for access to some high alpine hiking routes. Be sure to stop at the Russian Chapel en route for a memorable detour.

Where to eat in Kranjska Gora

View from the garden of Lačni Kekec restaurant

A firm favourite with my family is the Lačni Kekec barbeque restaurant/bar in the centre of Kransjka Gora town. Kecec is a local folk hero, the Slovenian (male) equivalent of Heidi. And lačni means ‘hungry.’ You should only head here if you are hungry, because the portions they serve are huge: their reasonably-priced ‘platter for two’ was enough for my family of four! There’s also a playground within the gardens of the restaurant where parents can let their kids play while enjoying a meal themselves – a bonus for everyone!

If you prefer a more intimate and romantic setting for your meal, a great option is the Milka Restaurant on the shores of Lake Jasna. It serves Slovenian fusion dishes in a relaxed environment. I’ve yet to visit, but judging by the reviews on TripAdvisor and Google, you should not be disappointed.
