Today, I am excited to announce a new project from Team EIF (Nick Reeves and Ingrid Wilson)…
Introducing New Lyricist Magazine
Back in February of last year, when we published Archery in the UK, Nick and I included the following as introduction:
1. Tend toward magic realism; the natural, the supernatural. 2. Eschew cliché, bandwagon & first draft. 3. Embroider! Embrace! Embody! 4. Blend language with landscape and vice versa. 5. Hike hill and lake, comb beach and page. Take to tarmac, to barricade, to battlement, to barrow. Encircle cathedrals and castles, clockwise and widdershins. 6. Experiment – with form, narrative and structure; be it sonnet, ballad, pantoum, postcard. 7. Collage, tessellate. 8. Cajole, conjure, create. Excellence is your goal. 9. Romanticists, nurture the dream state of mill and attic. 10. Declare this day a poets’ weekend! (from ‘Manifesto For The New Lyricists,’ 2023)
The New Lyricists take traditional forms and make something new and original out of them. They are bold, brave lovers of language, who are unconcerned with current trends away from lyrical and narrative poetry. In embracing the mould instead of shunning it, they break it in the most shocking and delightful way. New Lyricists are welcome to submit to New Lyricist magazine, which will be a limited-edition print publication. There will be no digital version. We want to get away from the screen, and back to the printed page. We want to celebrate the best of modern lyrical poetry. We want you to be part of the New Lyricist movement!
Submission Guidelines
- Please read the above paragraphs very carefully, for they explain the type of poetry we are looking for.
- We will publish song lyrics as well as poetry, though the lyrics should be able to stand alone without music.
- We welcome poems of any length, within reason (to fill no more than two pages of the finished publication).
- Submissions are by email to ingrid@experimentsinfiction.com. Please include the subject line ‘New Lyricist Submission’ in your email.
- Your poem can be typed into the body of your email, or attached as a Word document.
- No use of AI or plagiarism will be accepted – you can reference other writers in your work, but you must give appropriate credit.
- We are also looking for original artwork to include in the magazine. Please send high resolution images of any artwork as an attachment with your submission email.
- Submissions close on 1 February 2024.
We are enthused and excited by this project, and hope you will be, too: Happy New Year!
