Slender Novels by cassettes — Out Now!

Today sees the launch of the album Slender Novels, which is a retrospective of Nick Reeves‘ solo work with his band, cassettes, from 1998 to 2024. It is to be followed by the forthcoming Fancy Models, which will feature cassettes’ full band line-up.

A Modern Classic

All songs are written, performed and produced by Reeves, and together represent a selection of standout tracks spanning a period of more than 25 years. Rather than being ordered chronologically, the songs are presented thematically: we begin with the exhortation to ‘Throw Nothing Away,’ and end with the time-honoured advice: ‘keep your receipts’ (Receipts). In between, we explore the landscape of love, magic and dreaming. cassettes burst into life as self-styled kings of the ‘Local Lo-Fi Scene,’ with tongue-in-cheek lyrics to match: “playing for a fiver to a bunch of local boozers.”

As you might expect from a poet of his calibre, Reeves’ lyrics are pure magic: “I hear your voice/I’m ankle-deep in bluebells” (Jackdaws and Witches); “her arrow riveting my ear, my air” (Archery In The UK). The melodies are by turns haunting and catchy, and the production impeccable: from paired-down arrangements (Into Flames, Top Dollar) to lush and textured (Motown Sleeve, Magic Sam). Many of these tracks are already familiar, and very dear, to me personally, but all versions were new to my ear, and there are several brand-new tracks, including the momentous ‘If Whitman…’ which took my breath away. I could say more, but I’d rather you listen and discover for yourself.
