The heat was sweltering at noon:
the Minster Bells’ cascading tune
could not relieve me, seeking shade
within a willow-hidden glade.
A boat trip down the peaceful Ouse
with cooling breezes, soothing views
served soon to calm my sun-stroked mind,
such peace as weary travellers find.
Later, I walk familiar walls
as summer rain, all fragrant, falls
to I find I am a child again:
the child within, beneath the rain.
The summer holidays are here! I enjoyed a trip to York yesterday; a place I visited often as a child. Some photos below, and more on the EIF Instagram. A bonus prize if you can guess the tune in the video!

Beautiful, Ingrid. We saw a TV series set in York recently, and I kept thinking how beautiful it is. It sounds like you had a lovely time!

a great poem reminds me of my misspent youth some of which was squandered in that fair city
