Out Now: “Night-Shining White” by Helen Pletts and Ma Yongbo

I am thrilled to announce the publication of this collaborative, bilingual English-Chinese poetry collection, which is available in both paperback and hardback formats from Amazon, Waterstones and Barnes & Noble. Helen and Yongbo finally met in real life this week, and they will be celebrating the launch together at the Cambridge Poetry Festival: I wish them every success and many congratulations!

Together at last

Night-Shining White is the 19th EIF publication in five years. Stay tuned for number 20…

Praise for Night-Shining White

“Two poetic sensibilities from the furthest ends of the earth, yet harmonious. This collection proclaims the death of cliché, and the power of Telling Metaphor. Reading these mysteries brings undoubted pleasure and bold new perspectives on humanity.”
—Mike Bannister, Poet

“Chinese poet Ma Yongbo and UK poet Helen Pletts have formed an unusual and highly effective poetic union, responding to each other’s writing, and presenting the work in a translation response form that spans the world and its starkly different cultures, whilst uniting us in our consciousness and humanity. A shared profound love of nature further deepens the bond, creating a holistic vision of people, spirit and planet, all beautifully interwoven in this wonderful book.”
—Claire Palmer, Publisher, International Times

“Helen’s very personal poetry reveals her strong connection to the natural world while also laying herself open emotionally. She writes with a thoughtful, mesmerising delicacy on love and death, on joy and need, illness and exhaustion.”
—Kate Birch, Publisher, Ink Sweat and Tears

“Ma Yongbo is a poet of snow, shadows and absences. His poems have committed the bodies of his parents and his elder brother to ceremonial flames, and explore, over and over, scenes from a long-lost childhood. ‘Break free from the cloud shadows in your heart,’ he commands, while another poem admonishes, ‘nothing can hurt you,/you are already dead’ He makes room for the uncanny, and seeks essence.”
—Rosanna Warren, Poet
