Fall silent, and remember if you can
the falling leaves, beneath a canopy of stars
pulsing their light across the universe
the light of countless years.
Fall quickly with the squadron into line
fall out, dismissed in time
don’t miss a beat, because to miss
is to admit defeat.
Fall to your knees in prayer, and shed a tear
for all the Fallen in whose wake you follow
and pray your benedictions
don’t seem hollow.
Fall’s silent, as the poppies break new ground
embroidered on a blouse or eiderdown
by a widow weeping to the song
of her soldier underground.
