Ode to the Alpine Flowers

I do not yet know you by name
But by your colours and your rarity
For neither do you know how you are called
Nor know your fame:
What’s good for you is good enough for me.

You clothe the meadows high amongst the clouds:
That realm of air; that airy realm of hope
Far high above the clamouring cries and
Curses of the crowd
New light to seek, new opening hearts to shape

Like to your perfect symmetry
Of heaven and earth in endless harmony
Your swaying in the breeze at rest, at ease,
In blissful peace
A lesson to be learned: simplicity

Is bliss, and brightness of the blessed day
And ceaseless seemingly
Though as the sun climbs surely up the sky
The course of time
New makes the cycle of your life we see

And you in all your colours and your rarity
Return new hope to me
And all the shades and colours of both day and night
I recognise
As charting life’s bold mutability.

When I wrote about the Seven Lakes of Triglav earlier this week, I neglected to mention the beauty of the alpine flowers we saw during the walk. In an attempt to right this wrong, I have written an Ode to them, in keeping with the theme of this week’s Poetry Challenge. If you have a subject you believe is worthy of an ode, do take part before midnight next Monday! Also posting in response to dVerse open link night last night, hope I’m not too late to the party!

  1. Oh…..I so recall some of our mountain hikes in the days we did tent camping and had our children along (they are now 43 and 45!). Sometimes our path/trail would suddenly open on a meadow of wild flowers….I don’t think there is anything quite so beautiful and serene and breathtaking at the same time. These words of yours especially resonated with me
:Of heaven and earth in endless harmony
Your swaying in the breeze at rest, at ease,
    In blissful peace
A lesson to be learned: simplicity”
And the photo you’ve used here is sublime.

    1. Thank you Lillian! We took our little ones along on the walk and I hope when they are older they will have happy childhood memories of Alpine flowers 💐
