Once upon a time
there was a diesel and a steamy
chuffing down the tracks:
the diesel was oiling
and the steamy was chuffing and puffing
but then he stopped and did his breaks
but the diesel didn’t
so he crashed!
Then the rescue car came
and rescued all the people!
A poem by Ollie, aged 4!
I am delighted to say that my youngest son Ollie has begun to take an interest in poetry, following in the footsteps of his mum and older brother, Benji.
He asked me to write this down for him the other night, and told me with confidence that he will read it at Poets’ Pub. So if you tune in for dVerse Open Link Night Live tonight, you may well get to hear him read…
Rest assured that I am not a pushy parent in any way. But it does make me smile when the kids pick up on what I do and react to it in such a positive and creative manner :-)

No you can’t. He is already talented. I was just sharing this with my husband and he reminded me about a movie called the Kindergarten Teacher. It is about an incredible gifted young boy who is a poet.

Great movie, this teacher knew what a gift this precious child had. 🤗🌹🥰

A four year old who is even AWARE of poetry is a poet’s child for sure. I love that he dictated this poem and wants to read it at Poet’s Pub. That makes me smile. My son writes incredible poetry, far superior to mine. He can say “I’m going to write a Shakespearean sonnet” and some minutes later produces a perfect one. He is fifty now and I am putting together a book of his poems.

This is wonderful, Ingrid. My five year old is starting to want to write poetry when we are out in nature. Perhaps I will compile one for the next OLN to share. I imagine she would get along quite well with your son.

It is wonderful, Ingrid, that you have inspired your children.to write! <3 I remember composing and singing songs when I was Ollie's age. How would you like to hear the song, "The Pretty Pink Mamma Rooster?" Sorry, Ingrid, I don't remember all the words and only part of the tune. :)
I discovered a few years ago that my daughter had a blog full of poems that went back many years. I never knew she had written even a single poem, as she was never one to toot her own horn. I will be posting one of her old poems for Thanksgiving.
Tell Ollie I love his poem! <3 Really awesome! :) :) :) It seems that a fascination with trains runs in the family!
Have a great weekend!
