We are living in a post-truth world
where everything is what you make it
no one will tell you you are right or wrong:
but everyone will
choose sides
opt for this or that camp; over all
deny what’s going on
around, above, below, beside, beneath them;
only listen to the wind,
it knows the answer,
as the permafrost is plundered for its oil reserves
the line’s already crossed, the branches broken, tiles like razor blades are hurled
to cut our lies dead
in a post-truth world.
Inspecting the wreckage from Storm Isha this morning…
We had a tornado warning yesterday. A tornado warning – in the UK! We’re certainly not in Kansas anymore.
It strikes me that however many lies the politicians tell, however much wishy-washy language about ‘transitioning away’ from fossil fuels, the undeniable fact that we are destroying our environment is something we are all going to have to face, perhaps sooner rather than later:

I hope you did not have much storm damage. Tornado warnings are terrifying. We have had two or three tornados hit in nearby areas in the past several years–and I never remember any before in my life. There is a lot more flooding, too.
And sadly, the lies and disinformation are not limited to the climate.

This is true, Merril…a reflection of where we are currently at as a species, I think!

The line’s already crossed – absolutely right… been writing a climate series and the more research I do, the scarier it gets…

I think the best we can hope for right now is damage limitation, and we don’t even seem capable of doing that…

Agree… especially the small island states and lesser developed countries thar are on the frontline with not enough capability or time for adaptation….

(I think) I know you mean The cornfields in Kansas in the Wizard of Oz. And you’re right, you don’t live in Kansas. Unless the inevitable has already happened. Perhaps Kansas is now blanketed in UK type snow. Or worst—no snow that the corn fields count on for healthy harvests ! Oh no.
I pray we can find a satisfactory ending like with the characters in the Wizard of Oz and that those in power wake up to remember they carry hearts in their chests too.
Be safe, Ingrid. Blessings.

Scary stuff! Glad you are safe. Living on the border of Kansas and Missouri, we have had record cold weather. Have barely left the house for a week, been so cold. Luckily can work from home. Hoping to thaw out this week! Take Care!

I’m glad you’re managing to stay warm! Our cold snap was last week, followed by a sudden 10 degree (celsius) temperature rise!

Perfectly composed Ingrid, your poem to the point – as for politicians I can’t recall them ever being more pointless than they are now! You take care up where you are, all the best. Eric.

We were on the edge of that ‘green bit’ on the ‘amber’ warning map covering most of the country last night – so yes a wet and windy night but roof, trees and fences intact!

Truth? What is this thing you call truth? The effects of climate change seem to get worse in the US by the month. Our politicians (the few sane ones we have left) need to get clued in to the fact that our federal government is pumping out billions of dollars for FEMA to aid with natural disasters–and it’s only going to get worse.

It’s just crazy, Liz, and nobody benefits in the end!

It is happening, with extreme weather events as gigantic warnings politicians prefer to ignore, so they can be re-elected. Sigh. And truth has left the building as we are fed “alternative facts.” It is crazy-making to anyone still capable of critical thinking. So good to read you, a voice of sanity.

Good to hear from you, Sherry, thank you. I’m just surprised how many people in general seem able to ignore it!

The wind does hold many answers, yes. Insightful poem, Ingrid. A serious subject crafted into beautiful poetry. 👏🏻 Your region had a tornado warning, and I rode through another foggy morning. Unusual and surreal. Take care.

How true, Ingrid! Truth is one of the values I hold most dear, like solid ground under your feet. We seek for the truth, yet it seems to keep sliding away out from under us, always out of reach!

“a post truth world.” That line connects with me so much, both through its literal meaning and the way it plays into the narrative of your poem. Strong writing, Ingrid!

Indeed, the latest IPCC climate report gives a dramatic forecast for Europe. Even with the best efforts the temperature will rise further. Downgrading in human consumption is an option, however not realistic. That should implicate that the poor underdeveloped countries can hardly rise in welfare, as in the West we live in a benefitted condition. I have good hope that the technological development will bring solutions in time.
