‘Twas not the lark, his song melodious
but rather the seagull squark which woke us
~somewhat odious~
more so the fact
that fated day had dawned when we must part:
Oh, not at morningtide, of course
(some hours hence) but still
anon, and on our love endures
enlightening our art

Tonight, Laura hosts Meeting The Bar, and asks us to write an Aubade, which can be any one of the following:
- a poem evoking daybreak/greeting the dawn
- a poem about lovers parting at dawn
A tried to write a modern twist on the traditional Aubade, which (in English) dates back to the 17th Century.
Bravo Ingrid – conjuring the traditional but with that lovely twist in the ending

I think waking to a seagull would be better than any sweet birdsong but I love the sea

Ingrid, I never thought of the seagull’s squawk as being “odious,” haha, but I am sure it was an unpleasant alarm clock and an unwelcome messenger! Love the poem, and you managed to combine the two themes seamlessly! Very striking photo of the seagull! <3
